How an install in Sheffield actually goes

Four steps, and you know the price before step three.

01
We come and look

An engineer walks the rooms, then works outside. On a sloping site the outdoor unit needs a level, free-draining base, and a position clear of the wind that funnels along the valley.

02
You get the design and the price

System sized against your actual rooms, with the quote agreed in writing before anything is ordered.

Fixed in writing
03
We install it

Most single-room installs in Sheffield are done in a day. On a sloping plot the unit base is set out first, because a genuinely level mount is what keeps it quiet.

Pressure tested, charged, performance logged and the controls explained properly before we leave.

Covering Sheffield & Nearby

We install throughout South Yorkshire — nearby towns have their own local pages too.

Sheffield is really two jobs

What the housing here is actually like, and what that means once we are on site.

Property types we see in Sheffield

Sheffield is built across seven hills and its housing reflects that. Stone and brick Victorian terraces fill the inner suburbs at Walkley, Crookes and Heeley; substantial Victorian and Edwardian villas sit at Nether Edge, Ranmoor and Ecclesall; and there are large post-war estates and a big student rental market around Broomhill and Crookesmoor.

LOWER GROUNDHIGHER GROUND

What that means for the installation

Topography is the defining factor. Many Sheffield properties have significant level differences between front and rear, and hillside plots can put the natural outdoor unit position well above or below the indoor units. Every system has a maximum permitted vertical separation between indoor and outdoor units, and on the steeper Sheffield plots that is a real design constraint rather than a formality — we check it against the manufacturer's data at survey.

LOWER GROUNDHIGHER GROUND

Planning in Sheffield: what changed in 2025

Boundary standoff1m → none
Permitted unit size0.6 → 1.5m³

The most useful part of the May 2025 reform, for anyone buying comfort cooling rather than heating, is that air-to-air systems used to cool a property became permitted development for the first time. Previously only heating-only heat pumps qualified. The one-metre boundary rule went at the same time, the size limit rose to 1.5 cubic metres and detached houses gained a second permitted unit. Noise is still governed by MCS 020 at the neighbouring window. If you are in a flat, none of this displaces your lease or the freeholder's consent. On Sheffield's steep terraced streets the boundary change is the most useful of the four, though Nether Edge, Ranmoor and Broomhill remain conservation areas.

What goes into what

The property types we actually see in Sheffield, and what each one decides about the install.

Terraced houses

On a slope the rear yard is often stepped, so the outdoor unit needs a built-up level base rather than sitting straight on the ground.

Detached

Usually a choice of elevations, which on a slope means the unit can go where the ground is level and the wind is off it. Two units are now permitted on a detached house.

Listed and conservation

Consent is the starting assumption. None of the 2025 relaxations apply to a listed building or a highway-facing elevation in a conservation area.

Flats and apartments

Freeholder or management company consent comes before anything else, and the outdoor unit position is usually decided for you.

Solid stone or brick

Thick solid walls with no cavity. Cores are longer and slower, so routes are planned around existing openings and boxed internally rather than cut on the day.

Why Sheffield calls us back

Four things we will not move on.

01

Legally certified on refrigerant

Every engineer on a Sheffield job is F-Gas registered, with compliant records kept on every installation.

02

The quote is the price

Agreed in writing before any work begins, after a free on-site assessment. Nothing added afterwards.

03

Sized to the room, not the catalogue

Systems specified against your actual rooms and usage - including which elevation the room is on, because aspect and exposure change the load more than floor area does.

04

Backed after we leave

Comprehensive warranty on parts and labour, backed by an established group trading since 2019.

F-Gas Register
